Orangeville is the heart of Dufferin County, with a historic downtown along Broadway and growing commercial areas and plazas around it. If your business is downtown, your sign needs to respect the street’s heritage character. If you’re in a newer plaza, it needs to stand out alongside your neighbours.

Signs in downtown Orangeville’s heritage district

Much of downtown Orangeville is part of the Downtown Heritage Conservation District. That affects signs in a few important ways:

  • A heritage permit is needed for changes visible from the street, and new or altered signage is one of those changes. The sign must also meet the Town’s sign by-law.
  • The Town’s Guidelines for Signage on Heritage Properties ask that sign colours, fonts, shapes, materials and scale suit the building and the district’s 19th-century architecture.
  • The sign by-law includes a Heritage Sign Special Policy District for this area.

In practice, heritage-friendly signs often mean painted or carved-look panels, dimensional letters, projecting blade signs and window lettering, sized to fit the building’s original sign band.

Storefront signs in plazas

Outside the heritage district, Orangeville plazas commonly use:

  • Channel letters, illuminated 3D letters for maximum visibility
  • Light box (cabinet) signs, a lit cabinet with a printed face
  • Fascia panels, printed or lettered sign band panels

Compare the two main lit options in Channel letters vs light box signs.

Window graphics

Window lettering is a classic fit for a heritage main street, and cut vinyl hours, logos and gold-style lettering work well on older storefront glass. In plazas, full-colour graphics, perforated one-way film and frosted privacy film are popular.

Wall graphics

Inside, printed murals and vinyl lettering brand your space, from cafés and restaurants to offices and showrooms.

Sign permits in Orangeville

Signs in Orangeville are regulated by the Town’s Sign By-law 42-2006, and downtown signs may also need a heritage permit. The Town’s Building and Planning staff at Town Hall (87 Broadway) can confirm what your property needs. Check before you order, especially downtown.
