Signs in Caledon: storefront signs, channel letters and graphics

Caledon is a town of communities rather than one downtown: Bolton, Caledon East, Mayfield West, Inglewood, Alton, Palgrave and more, along with growing employment areas and a large rural landscape. Signs here range from main street storefronts and new plaza units to farm businesses, garden centres and industrial buildings.
Storefront signs
For shops and services in Bolton and other village centres, the most popular sign types are:
- Channel letters: illuminated 3D letters, common in newer plazas
- Light box (cabinet) signs: a lit cabinet with a printed face
- Dimensional letters: non-lit cut letters that suit village main streets and heritage-style buildings
- Fascia panels: printed or lettered sign band panels
See Channel letters vs light box signs to compare the two most common lit options.
Ground and building signs for larger sites
Industrial, agricultural and commercial properties along Caledon’s highways and rural roads often need ground signs or large building signs that can be read from a distance and at road speed. Size, height and placement are controlled by the by-law, so they’re worth planning early.
Window and wall graphics
Window graphics promote your business on the glass, with options like full-colour prints, perforated one-way film, frosted privacy film and cut vinyl hours. Inside, wall murals and vinyl lettering brand your reception area, showroom or office.
Mobile signs in Caledon
Mobile signs (portable signs on a trailer or stand) are a popular way to promote openings and events. Under Caledon’s rules:
- You need a mobile sign permit, applied for at least five days before you want the sign up
- Applications include a scaled plan showing where the sign goes, proof of insurance, and a property owner consent form if the sign is on private property
- Permits expire 30 days after they’re issued and can be renewed a limited number of times each year
Sign permits in Caledon
Caledon’s signs are regulated by Sign By-law 2017-54, which took effect on January 1, 2018. Signs can’t block views of a public highway or railway crossing, or block exits, windows, doors or access to a building. Only the property owner or their authorized agent can apply for a sign permit, which is why an authorization is usually part of the paperwork your sign company prepares.
Fees and forms change, so confirm current requirements with the Town of Caledon before you apply.
